Interview: Malort & Savior

This is another project that I helped produce for WholesomeZine. This is an interview with a local pop punk band called Malort & Savior. This is a project that I took the reins on and was a great learning experience especially the hardships that I faced during the production.

Phase 1: For this is phase I identified and researched the band before reaching out to ensure that they held similar values to Wholesome. I also researched questions that would make for a good interview, I wanted the questions we asked to be ones the band had not answered before.

Phase 2: This phase ended up being the longest due to time conflicts between myself, the band and the available space at the Wholesome HQ. This is when I reached out and shared the story of wholesome and the desire to build a relationship with local bands to build a musical community in Chicago. This Phase could have been handled better; I did not use the template from Wholesome so the initial email was not as professional as it should have been.

Phase 3: In phase 3 is the scheduling and pre-production, the scheduling took longer than expected but was able to find a good date for everyone involved. Part of the preproduction was finding a member of the Wholesome team to be the on-screen talent representing WholesomeZine as well as ensuring what equipment would be available.

Phase 4: This is the day of filming there were more than a few issues that fell completely on me for this project. when setting up the cameras I did not set the focus correctly causing the band to be slightly out of focus, this is an issue that I could have solved by having more crew as I attempted to run all the equipment by myself and that lead to inefficiencies. If I were to do this again, I would have someone running the audio mixer and I would focus on the camera. Another improvement that I could have made was to use a different lens for the filming, the lens I used was a manual focus 35mm which was as wide as I needed given the space we were filming in, and an autofocus lens would have helped the focus on the subject.

Phase 5: This is where I got to editing of the interview and I truly did not make it easy on myself, but I wanted to make this a challenge on myself in regard to improving my color correction skills. First how I shot the footage was in B-raw. This allows for far more control of the color, and I wanted more practice to ensure that I learn how to properly grade a shot. There was however an issue that I did not notice when I first filmed the Interview and that was to do with the time that it was filmed; This was shot during sunset meaning that the lighting and the color palate changes throughout the video. Which is one issue that I did not foresee but will take into consideration into future projects.

Phase 6: This is the phase where I complete a draft and open it to criticism from the team to seek their perspective on the project and to where I may be able to improve. These suggestions are taken and applied similarly to other projects and a final draft is made which is currently under review.

All assets are to be uploaded at a later date till video is released by WholesomeZine.
